Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Josef and Lilli Fleischmann of St. Josef's Winery. The interview took place at St. Josef's Winery in Canby, Oregon on November 9, 2018.

Josef and Lilli Fleischmann are the founders of St. Josef's Winery. In this interview, the Fleischmanns talk about how they came to the United States and eventually moved to Oregon, where they planted grapes and established a winery. They both discuss the difficulties in figuring out their roles within the wine industry, as well as how they came up with the name for their winery. Josef explains their winemaking philosophy, developed with much outside help and European influence. The Fleischmanns reflect on how far the wine industry has progressed since they first entered it, predicting that it will continue to grow in the future, and they share their hope that the family will continue their business.
