Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Brent Stone of King Estate Winery. The interview took place at King Estate Winery in Lorane, Oregon on July 29, 2019.

Brent Stone is winemaker at King Estate Winery. In this interview, Stone talks about how he got into the wine industry after first being involved in the dairy and ice cream industry, beginning with the "University of King Estate," and later transitioning into winemaking. Stone describes the similarities and differences in packaging for ice cream versus wine, recent production growth, and his time at King Estate thus far. He shares how having a big team is advantageous because everything is done by committee, which is beneficial to achieving the winery's vision. Stone also discusses his winemaking philosophy (which is rooted in sustainability), a typical day on the job, and the role of King Estate in the Oregon wine industry. Stone closes the interview by describing changes he's seen to the industry and his thoughts on its future, the Oregon Solidarity project, and he offers some advice for individuals wanting to enter the industry.
