Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Larry Stone of Lingua Franca Wines. The interview took place at Lingua Franca in Salem, Oregon on August 8, 2019.

Larry Stone is co-founder and CEO of Lingua Franca Wines. In this interview, Stone traces his journey to wine. He describes how he developed a passion for food and wine at a very young age, his chemistry background and his work in the humanities, and how he eventually won the Best International Sommelier in French Wines competition in Paris and became a Master Sommelier. Stone describes the various places he has worked and the accomplishments he has attained in the wine world and restaurant business. He also discusses the process of coming to Oregon and starting Lingua Franca. Stone explains how he chooses what to plant and why he farms organically, the idea of building the brand of Lingua Franca with the goal of accurately reflecting place within each wine, and his aspiration of creating world peace through wine to bring people together. To conclude, Stone touches on the future for Lingua Franca, offers advice for individuals looking to pursue their dreams, ponders the future for the Oregon wine industry, and shares what he’s most proud of thus far.
