Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Allen and Jill Methven of Methven Family Vineyards. The interview took place at Methven Family Vineyards in Dayton, Oregon on May 31, 2019.

Allen and Jill Methven are the founders and co-owners of Methven Family Vineyards. Methven Family Vineyards exclusively produces estate varietals of chardonnay, gamay noir, pinot gris, pinot noir, and riesling. The couple also sells their premium grapes to vintners in Oregon. In this interview, the Methvens discuss how they got into the Oregon wine industry, as well as the challenges that came with planting a vineyard and picking a property. They also talk about important hospitality aspects of the business, choosing what to plant, the uniqueness of the Eola Hills American Viticultural Area (AVA), and the future of the Oregon wine industry.
