Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Scott and Lisa Neal of Coeur de Terre Vineyard. The interview took place at Coeur de Terre Vineyard in McMinnville, Oregon on January 15, 2019.

Scott and Lisa Neal are the owners of Coeur de Terre Vineyard, where Scott is also the winemaker and Lisa is the general manager. In this interview, the couple discusses how they found themselves in the wine industry in Oregon, including how they acquired the land for Coeur de Terre, what it is like to be "second generation" in the wine industry, and how they came up with the name Coeur de Terre (which translates to “rock of the earth”). Lisa describes the difficulties they encountered when starting the vineyard and the large amounts of help they received from multiple sources, while Scott shares what it is about Pinot Noir that he finds so captivating. Lisa also explains why they chose to farm sustainably. The Neals describe how they make their partnership work while running a business, and they talk about both the future of Coeur de Terre and the Oregon wine industry.
