Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Hal Medici of Medici Vineyard. The interview took place at Medici's home in Newberg, Oregon on April 16, 2019.

Hal Medici is the owner of Medici Vineyard, established in 1976 on his property in the Chehalem Mountains. In this interview, Medici talks about how he obtained his land, growing grapes, and his emergence in the Oregon wine industry. Medici discusses how he was able to help wineries start their businesses using his grapes, as well as his current plans in trying to create a foundation that works in connection with St. Jude’s hospital. He talks about his relationship with fellow wine industry veteran, Dick Ponzi, as well as his views on the wine industry when it was first emerging and at present. Medici concludes the interview by discussing the future of the Oregon wine industry, as well as some of his favorite memories from working in the wine industry.
