Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Chad Stock of Craft Wine Company. The interview took place at Craft Wine Company in Carlton, Oregon on August 2, 2018.

Chad Stock is a winemaker at Craft Wine Company, a self-proclaimed "drink tank" that houses three brands (Omero, Minimus, and Origin) in one winery. In this interview, Stock explains how he naturally gravitated towards wine and how he has always enjoyed the science part of the industry. He discusses his upfront approach with his ingredients and his belief that “wine is not an alcoholic beverage, it’s an agricultural product.” Stock ponders the future of the Oregon wine industry, including his view that there will be a change in climate and culture that will result in sub-AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) breaking apart and establishing themselves with different grape varieties. He also talks about his own business and his eventual hopes to turn it into a non-profit organization that can create an independently funded trade school to help people learn about the many aspects of the wine industry.
