Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Dan Rinke of Johan Vineyards. The interview took place at Johan Vineyards in Rickreall, Oregon on July 1, 2019.

Dan Rinke is the winegrower at Johan Vineyards. In this interview, Rinke explains how he got into the wine industry after first working in the restaurant industry, ultimately deciding to go into winemaking (specifically viticulture). He talks about biodynamics and sustainability, how he ended up in Oregon at Johan Vineyards, and the changes and growth he’s seen in the industry. Rinke also discusses Art + Science, a side label he started with his wife which has evolved into both wine and cider, and his hopes for that business. Rinke concludes the interview by describing his winemaking philosophy, his proudest accomplishment, and his perspective on the futures of both Johan Vineyards and the Oregon wine industry.
