Description
This paper studies opening weekend box-office revenues for movies of the comedy and science fiction genres. Our model suggests that only the following factors - number of screens, media attention, genre, and whether or not a movie is a sequel to another - have significant impacts on the opening weekend box-office revenues. The paper also examines some potential differences due to genre in the impact of budget, star power and media attention on opening weekend revenues. The results show that the difference in the impact of budget does exist, and is more favorable for science fiction movies than comedy movies.
