Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Michael Etzel of Beaux Frères Winery. The interview took place at Beaux Frères Winery in Newberg, Oregon on April 12, 2019.

Michael Etzel is the founding partner and president of Beaux Frères Winery. In this interview, Etzel discusses how he got the “wine bug,” first selling wine, then transitioning to owning a winery and making wine. Etzel explains how his farming lifestyle has informed his job in the wine industry, as well as how he acquired the Beaux Frères property while on vacation in Oregon. Although he had no initial experience making wine or growing grapes, Etzel's passion to succeed led him to having great success with his wines. Etzel also describes the evolution of his winemaking philosophy. Etzel talks about sustainable farming, future plans for Beaux Frères, his own personal goals, and what he sees as the future of the Oregon wine industry.
