Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Katie Santora of Chehalem Winery. The interview took place at Chehalem Winery in Newberg, Oregon on March 15, 2019.

Katie Santora is the winemaker at Chehalem Winery. She joined the Chehalem Winery team in 2012 as assistant winemaker and transitioned to her role as head winemaker in 2018. In this interview, Santora discusses her entrance into the wine industry after a friend of her dad suggested she study winemaking. She talks about her studies at the University of California, Davis and her journey to Chehalem via several other Oregon wineries. Santora describes her travels, as well as the tremendous support she has received from the industry that has kept her passionate about winemaking. Santora expresses her gratitude for the position she has as a woman in the wine industry, and she discusses her winemaking philosophy. She concludes by offering advice to people looking to enter the wine industry and pondering the future of Chehalem.
