Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield University archivist Rich Schmidt with Cody Wright of Purple Hands Winery. The interview took place at Purple Hands Winery on August 18, 2020.

Cody Wright is owner and winemaker at Purple Hands Winery. In this interview, Wright describes growing up in a winemaking family before leaving to study environmental science and geology in college, eventually gaining experience by working harvests in Oregon and Australia. Wright explains what went into the naming of his brand, and he talks about relationships, managing expectations, and finding his place within the Oregon wine industry. Wright also discusses his philosophy of winemaking and growing grapes, including how he learned to trust his instincts. He concludes the interview by explaining his interest in sustainability, his hopes for the future of his brand, and the changes he has noticed over the years in the Oregon wine industry.
