Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College archivist Rich Schmidt with Patty Skinkis of Oregon State University (OSU). The interview took place at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon on March 1, 2019.

Patty Skinkis is associate professor and viticulture extension specialist at Oregon State University's Oregon Wine Research Institute (OWRI). In this interview, Skinkis discusses how she started out studying horticulture but later developed a passion for viticulture. She explains how she ended up in Oregon and her position at OWRI. Skinkis describes her role at OSU, the academic side of her life (including the current research she is conducting), and her involvement in the Oregon wine industry. She talks about the challenges in her job, as well as what it is like to be one of the few women in her field in the industry. Skinkis explains how grateful she feels to be a mentor for many women who are looking to become part of the Oregon wine industry. She concludes by talking about future projects for OWRI and her hopes for the industry as a whole.
