Policies and Guidelines for Authors

Contents

1. Review Procedures

  1. The general editors, in consultation with members of the editorial board, will make an initial assessment of manuscripts to ensure that manuscripts meet the basic standards of the Journal, including basic standards of academic writing and research and appropriateness of the topic and approach. See Manuscript Review Standards below for more on the standards of the Journal.
  2. For manuscripts that meet the basic standards of the Journal, the general editors will request three suitable scholars to review the manuscript and provide the editorial board and the author with an assessment of the manuscript’s qualities. Reviewers will use the Peer Review Form as a template.
  3. The reviewers will evaluate each manuscript and assign it one of the following four designations: 1) “publish,” 2) “publish after revision,” 3) “reassess after revision,” 4) “reject.”
  4. Explanation of the four designations: “Publish” means that the manuscript under review is fit for publication without revision or with only very minor changes; “publish after revision” means that the manuscript requires some revision, but revisions are not deemed substantial to the core of the argument or research; “reassess after revision” means that the manuscript shows promise, but requires substantial revision to the core of the argument or research before being fit for publication; “reject” means that the article falls short of the basic standards of publication in the IIJBS, does not align with the academic mission of the Journal, and/or contains such major problems of argumentation and/or research that the reviewer(s) and/or editor(s) cannot see how the article can be made suitable for publication in the Journal.
  5. All authors who submit their work for review will be notified of the review decision. Manuscripts with the decision “publish” and “publish after revision” may be published in the next available issue upon the decision of the editorial board. Authors of manuscripts with the decision, “reassess after revision,” will be given the opportunity to revise and resubmit their manuscripts.
  6. Manuscripts should be written either in English or Hindi and will be evaluated by two or more persons whow are fluent in the language in which the manuscript is written. In exceptional cases, manuscripts written in languages other than English or Hindi may be considered by the editorial board; they must be submitted with a summary in either English or Hindi (or both).
  7. Manuscripts that are translated or revised versions of articles already published in another language may be published in IIJBS at the discretion of the editorial board. Such manuscripts should be submitted with documentation of the approval to publish from those holding the copyright of the initial publication.
  8. The editorial board shall give reviewers one month from the date of acceptance of the request to review the manuscript, although extensions may be granted at the discretion of the general editors.
  9. After receiving manuscript reviews, the general editors will select articles for publication in consultation with selected members of the editorial board, and notify authors of the editorial decisions.
  10. The general editor(s) and managing editor(s) will determine any matters not specified in these policies and guidelines.

2. Manuscript Review Standards

  1. Manuscripts must follow the author/date citation method in the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style. Authors whose manuscripts do not adequately conform to Chicago style guidelines may be asked to revise and resubmit their manuscripts before considering them for review.
  2. Essays must clearly express the following basic components of effective scholarly communication: 1) the principal problem under consideration in the essay, 2) the main question and thesis, 3) the principal research archive used to answer the question and support the thesis, 4) supporting argumentation that forms the basis for the discussion of the question and thesis, and 5) an explanation of why it is important to answer the main question. For more on these components, authors are encouraged to consult Wayne C. Booth et al., The Craft of Research (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1995), in one of its four editions.
  3. Essays should present a constructive thesis and original research that contributes to the scholarly dialogue about Buddhism and its academic study.
  4. Essays should NOT simply analyze, survey, or summarize primary or secondary literature.
  5. Essays should take into account relevant primary and secondary literature, and provide discussion and references to previous research wherever appropriate.
  6. Essays should include an abstract of 150-250 words with the following components: the main problem, question, and thesis; an indication of the principal research archive and supporting argument; an indication of the significance of answering the main question.
  7. Exceptions to the above guidelines may include manuscripts that contain annotated translations and/or critical editions of Buddhist texts, bibliographic articles, review essays, and notices.
  8. Manuscripts that contain only mechanical translations without any introductory or explanatory apparatus are discouraged.
