Abstract

The purpose of my sabbatical was to begin writing a manuscript for a textbook in online nursing education. In collaboration with Dr. Henny Breen, I submitted a proposal that was accepted by a premier publisher in nursing education for a book tentatively titled, A Collaborative Model for Online Nursing Education. The collaborative model that we have developed for online nursing education grew out of our philosophy for nursing education, experience teaching in the Linfield online RN to BSN program, and our belief that the modality of delivering education is second to educational theory and best practices. Our model relies on the integration of several related parts that are necessary to implement a successful online program. After deep reflection, we realized that collaboration is central to every phase of the educational experience. Collaborative processes support the program administratively, through outreach, recruitment, and academic advising. Collaborative learning and collaborative curriculum development form the basis of our theoretical approach to teaching. While technology is often perceived as the most central component of online education, we believe it is only one of the tools used to deliver the program. We have found that teaching that is grounded in educational theory and best practices is critical to the success of online programs.
