English Department
The English Department provides much of the backbone for a liberal arts education. Cultural literacy comes in part, at least, by being well read not only in current literature but also in the traditions of American, British, and continental literature that go back at least as far as the classical literature of Greece and Rome.
In addition to providing courses for the general student, the English department offers two majors, one in literature (English) and one in creative writing. Some students use their major to prepare for a career in secondary education. Others go on to graduate schools for literary studies, creative writing, law, and business. Students are well prepared for any graduate school or career where reading and writing skills are important.
