Abstract

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, attorney and former lieutenant governor of Maryland (1995-2003), discusses her view of a college's purpose. In her lecture, Townsend describes what she sees as a worrying trend for the United States: a greater divisiveness and focus on individualism, which lessens the focus on community. Townsend asks, how do we instill (or do we care about instilling) a love for our country, and what has happened to patriotism in the United States?
