Description
Through the development of characters and personas in pop concept albums and “emotion pictures,” BIPOC queer and gender non-conforming artists like Janelle Monáe and Melanie Martinez portray and explore the experiences of historically suppressed queer voices of color. These projects expand upon traditional pop spaces and the foundations of rock concept albums, from the likes of The Beach Boys and The Beatles, to include new and inclusive stories that are more representative of artists who live outside the constrictions of traditional heteronormative societal norms.
