High Desert Journal: Writing and the West

Location

Vivian A. Bull Music Center: Delkin Recital Hall

Subject Area

English: Creative Writing

Description

As assistant nonfiction editor at High Desert Journal, I worked with Professor Joe Wilkins on the creative essays that appeared in Issue 23 of this literary magazine. Becoming a "Witness to the West," I read countless essays that detailed the land's beauty, harshness, and the resilience of the people who inhabit it. During this internship, I worked with several authors to bring essays to their highest potential before publication, wrote a book review that appeared on the journal's website, and started an interview series with previous High Desert authors called, "What is the West?"

This presentation will focus on the process of how essays evolve from their beginning stages to publication, and how learning about what the literary world has to offer can be a gateway to many other opportunities for creative writers.
