Description
Sleep deprivation can negatively affect a person’s work performance. Will sleep deprivation have an effect on nurse’s error rates in a clinical environment? We will test this with a clinical simulation and use of the Stanford Sleepiness Scale (http://www.stanford.edu/~dement/sss.html). Nurses will be chosen from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and have no signs of physical or psychiatric disorders. The study will be held in a sleeping lab. An experimental group of 10 nurses will be sleep deprived and a control group of 10 nurses will not be sleep deprived. They will be tested separately. The predicted outcome is error rates in the sleep deprived group will increase compared to the control group. The purpose is to explore the effect of sleep deprivation in a simulated workplace setting.
