Description
This study examined excerpts from five interviews with members of the Dory Fleet in Pacific City, Oregon, conducted during the months of June, July, and August in 2011. The purpose of the project was to understand how co-cultural groups create their community by examining the members’ communication about their social reality and how they construct their value system. Burke’s cluster criticism was used to identify key terms and chart their associated terms. The rhetorical cluster analysis revealed four themes: the uniqueness of dory fishing, the communication mediums used among members and between members and nonmembers, the notion of community in the Dory Fleet, and the industry and fisheries associated with the Dory Fleet. This study concluded that the Dory Fleet of Pacific City, Oregon values its uniqueness, communication methods, community, and industry because of the importance that is placed on reliance, tradition, and heritage.
