Description
This project was a 25-minute documentary video on the history and development of the International Pinot Noir Celebration. A focal point for the wine industry, the IPNC is significant to the economic and cultural life of the Yamhill Valley and the state of Oregon. The event has special importance for Linfield College, which has hosted the IPNC since its inception in 1987. The project relied on historical sources to tell the story of the IPNC as a local enterprise, through the impressions and reflections of the event’s participants and witnesses. The project employed a combination of ethnographic interviewing, artifact analysis and documentary production techniques to achieve an understanding of the origins and evolution of the IPNC.
The video premiered at the 25th IPNC on July 28, 2011. The project was submitted to the Northwest Filmmaker’s Festival, and it was made available to local public access television outlets in Oregon. A portion of the video was shown on the first day of the 2011 fall semester in the MSCM 150 Introduction to Mass Communication course, and the students involved in the project discussed their experiences and insights with the class. In the MSCM 325 Visual Communication course in spring 2012, the project provided a case study of documentary production methods and techniques. In the spring 2012 MSCM 430 History of American Media course, the video provided an example of original research on topics in mass communication history, using primary sources. In MSCM 430, the student producers served as peer instructors, assisting the students with historical research and multimedia techniques for narrative construction and presentation.
