Description
Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor is a play about mistaken identity, farcical plot twists, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors. The design of the play must address the farcical and over-the- top nature of the play while still adhering to the structure of a hotel environment. The play takes place in a 1934 upscale two-room penthouse suite with six doors that, due to the action, can be slammed repeatedly. In conciliation with the director we chose to keep the play in the period of the 1930s. To meet the production criteria, the design needed to focus on the upscale look of the setting while giving the actors enough room for the farcical nature of the play. The play is fun, exciting, whimsical, and bold. Therefore, visually the scenic design needs to create a fun, inviting, and over-the-top environment. In keeping with the upscale visual elements of the 1930s, I chose to focus the design on traditional art deco patterns and colors.
