Oral History | Viticulture and Oenology
Lynn Penner-Ash earned a degree in Enology and began working in California until moving up to Oregon in 1988, where she became one of the first female winemakers hired in Oregon. In 1998, she and her husband started Penner-Ash Wine Cellars, where they have gone from producing 125 cases in 1998 to 15,000 cases in 2015.
In this interview, Lynn Penner-Ash tells about what drew her to Oregon and some of the issues going on when she arrived as a second-generation winemaker. One difference from California was the stricter labeling laws and higher taxes in Oregon. Penner-Ash appreciates the challenge of growing grapes in Oregon and also discusses the marketing challenges and changes that she has seen in the industry over the years.
