Abstract

This project did not fund a specific research project, but rather my attendance at a unique journalism training opportunity: the 2014 Mayborn Conference at the University of North Texas’s Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism. The theme for 2014, “Narratives on the Cutting Edge: Writing about Science, Technology, Medicine and Innovation,” was particularly relevant to my interests in long-form nonfiction writing and technology.

I attended this conference in July 2014 and found it to be incredibly informative and inspiring. With participation from dozens of successful, talented writers, the presentations and discussions were rich and detailed. I have extensive notes on the proceedings, as well as pages of ideas generated for my own future work in this area. Though I have not yet produced any long-form nonfiction writing of my own between July and this September report, I do feel much better equipped to begin developing possible in-depth projects like those crafted by the writers at this event.
