This sculpture was created as part of the Linfield College course Introduction to Studio, taught by Totem Shriver.

Artist's Statement

When we first began, we knew we wanted to create something organic. As we started to sketch out ideas, we came up with something similar to what we have now. However, we had no strict design plan and simply started to build. Once we started to sculpt it together, it began reminding us of little city buildings held together by a central structure. The shapes on the back create a feeling of unity with the individual structures. There is still variety in the different patterns on the structures as well as mini sculptures reminiscent of those in a real city. As an engineer would support their structures with triangles, we too added many triangular supports to both literally and metaphorically hold the piece together. The final piece contains a playful, unbalanced feeling provided by the arrangement of the architectural forms. This sporadic organization of structures allows for the viewer to use their imagination and conclude their own interpretation of the final structure.
