Abstract

This interview is an oral history conducted by Linfield College Archives staff Stephanie Hofmann with Laurent Montalieu of NW Wine Company, Soléna Estate, and Westmount Wines. The interview took place at NW Wine Company in Dundee, Oregon on September 5, 2017.

Laurent Montalieu is the co-founder and executive winemaker at Westmount Wine Company. Raised in Guadaloupe and Bordeaux, France, Montalieu moved to Oregon in 1987 and began making wine for Bridgeview Vineyards. In 1995, he moved on to WillaKenzie Estate, where he became a partner and winemaker. Montalieu is also the owner of NW Wine Company, a custom winegrowing facility, and co-owner (with his wife, Danielle Andrus Montalieu) of Soléna Estate. In this interview, Montalieu talks about how he came to the United States to make wine, starting each of his wineries, and what makes them all special. He also discusses the difficulties of selling wine once it's made and the future of the Oregon wine industry.
