Abstract

Funds were requested to support one student, Evan Carlson, to investigate the development of a calcium sensor using calcein blue embedded in a sol-gel matrix using fluorescence and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with me. This project builds upon my previous research involving the development of new host materials for chemically active dyes that can be used to determine the amount of calcium or iron in water. The goals of this project are twofold: to determine 1) if new materials can be made containing calcein blue that can be detected using SERS and fluorescence spectroscopy and 2) if these methods of detection can quantitatively determine the amount of calcium in solution.

Comments

This research was conducted as part of a Linfield College Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Grant in 2014, funded by the Office of Academic Affairs.
