Artist's Statement

The sculpture we created represents our perspective on the meaning of life. Granted not many people feel this way, but for us the meaning of life is that every day is a chance to start anew. As we brainstormed, we came to the conclusion that the best way to illustrate this concept would be to build an hourglass. The way this metaphor works is, every time you flip over the hourglass, it is the start of a new day, a new chance to enjoy the life we are given. When beginning this project, we took the straight-lined toothpicks and turned them into two circles with equal proportion. These circles became the top and bottom of our hourglass, and are held up by two plus one rhythmic pillars, adding support. Inside the three pillars is our helix shape representing the top and bottom dome of our hourglass. We added cut up toothpicks in an effort to represent sand falling through the glass. Our collaborative efforts and the balance of these elements create a strong overall unity to our finished piece and its meaning.
